The Instructional Shift of Close Reading: Part 2

The courses in this catalog are for staff, teachers, or anyone looking to increase their knowledge or skill in the presented subject areas. Teachers, these courses are approved for act 48 credit. Administrators, seats in these courses can also be purchased in bulk for any number of staff. They are all self-paced and presented fully online.

This Learning Path is one of four Learning Paths in a series that will examine Text-Dependent Analysis through the instructional shifts of Close Reading and writing from sources.

In the previous Learning Path entitled, The Instructional Shift of Close Reading: Part 1, participants explored phases of Close Reading and developed an understanding of the process and benefits of Close Reading. Through knowledge-building activities, questions, videos, and application activities in this Learning Path entitled, The Instructional Shift of Close Reading: Part 2, participants will learn strategies for supporting students in Close Reading and ultimately in Text-Dependent Analysis.

Focusing on Close and Careful Reading is a necessary component of Text-Dependent Analysis. After learning about the phases of Close Reading, the next step is to learn about and apply strategies that are useful in supporting Close Reading.

Course Description

In this course you will: 
  • Select appropriate texts for a Close Reading;
  • Differentiate text-dependent questions from other types of questions;
  • Identify the skills and concepts needed for students to approach any text for analysis;
  • Discover the value of annotating a text;
  • Promote accountable student talk through conversations and discussions about a text; and,
  • Explore a  variety of graphic organizers that can be used to bridge Close Reading and writing.
  • Earn 3 hours.
